When it comes to hair dye, you may have to embrace the -ish in Toxin Free(ish). There is no such thing as a toxin free permanent hair dye. But, these are the clean-est options you will find.
Pro tip: Semi-permanent are less toxic and less damaging. If you are using permanent, off the scalp applications like bayalage are best.
There is no truly clean permanent hair dye, but this color system is in a league of its own and the clean-est option available. This is the only brand that is free of hair shaft openers (ammonia or ethanolamine), PPD, resorcinol or any other skin sensitizer. It does have fragrance. Their colors are truly permanent and if I were still dying my hair, this is the line I'd be using.
This is also a great option. It does is ammonia as a hair shaft opener, so it is more hair damaging than Elumen. Professional only
Similar to YUV, except is uses Ethanolamine instead of ammonia as a hair shaft opener. Professional only
Many at home hair dyes are available on Amazon can be found all in one place for price comparisons in my Shop.
This Henna Semi Permanent color is both USDA Organic and ECOCERT certified and comes in a wide variety of shades. Perfect for covering greys, darkening by a shade or 2 and brightening up a naturally light brown or blonde color. There is nothing but good for your hair ingredients in here.
