Not only does spring bring seasonal allergies, but it’s also the most popular time of the year to clean and detox your home.
So in honor of spring cleaning, I’m starting a three part cleaning series. Each of the next three episodes will be my bite-sized hot takes and we’re starting off strong by tackling toxic laundry detergent. Laundry detergent should be one of the items at the top of your list for detoxifying your home goods. Not only are we exposed to a laundry detergents toxins through our clothing, but we’re also breathing in polluted air as our washing machine runs and sleeping in toxic sheets.
Check out the other episodes in this series:
- Episode 13: Spring Cleaning: Why You Should Ditch the Dryer Sheets
- Episode 14: Spring Cleaning: Is Your Household Cleaner Greenwashed?
Many laundry detergent companies that claim to be clean are just greenwashing their products. They’re investing more money in marketing themselves to look like the good guys than they are into actually fixing the problem. So tune in to learn exactly what products I recommend and what specific ingredients you should avoid while shopping.
I love laundry detergent swaps because, in the long run, you’ll actually be saving yourself money AND saving your health in the process. I know a lot of healthy swaps can feel like you have to constantly opt for the more expensive options.
But when you go toxin-free in your laundry, you are not paying for the water that they’re putting in these cleaners that they’re charging you for. So this toxic laundry detergent swap is a no-brainer, you just have to know which products are trying to deceive you. That’s where I come in! My Green Cleaning Guide will help you avoid these green washers with ease.
In this Episode, I Cover:
-
New York states new toxin regulations and how it will effect laundry detergent companies
-
The carcinogen found in most mainstream laundry detergents (Tide, Gain, etc.)
-
The importance of going fragrance free
-
Which laundry detergent companies are greenwashing
-
Laundry products I absolutely love and endorse
Your Constant Exposure to Laundry Detergent
Exposure to laundry detergent is a double whammy.
- You are inhaling the things you’re washing your laundry in.
- It’s polluting the air in your home.
- You’re putting those clothes on your body so you’re putting those toxins topically on your skin.
- It’s on the sheets you’re sleeping in every night.
- Toxins are on the towels you use to dry your hands or body after the shower.
The exposure to toxins in laundry detergent go well beyond the wash cycle. It’s basically constant exposure.
It’s one of the products in your home that should be at the top of the priority list to swap out. I really think your cleaning supplies are a simple thing to swap to a non-toxic alternative, and it saves you a considerable amount of money.
Traditional laundry detergents that you find on store shelves mostly contain water. You’re paying for a container of water with a tiny bit of cleaning solution + tons of toxins.
Non-toxic laundry detergents are usually sold as concentrates. So maybe you pay a little more, but you get sooooo much more out of it. I use Thieves laundry detergent concentrate and one bottle lasts me almost a year. This switch can save you a ton of money in the long-run.
Swap Your Toxic Laundry Detergent
In the episode, I deep dive into all the toxins found in toxic laundry detergent, including 1,4 dioxide (a known carcinogenic), fragrance, and parabens. It’s really important for your overall health to avoid these ingredients as much as possible.
And switching to toxin-free laundry detergent is one of the easiest ways to do it. I have some recommendations in my Toxin Free Shopping Guide, but the brand Thieves is my all-time favorite. Use code SHAREYL to get 10% off your order.
