Is meat really the enemy of sustainability? Vegetarianism and veganism are on the rise because this is the prevailing thought. But today’s guest, Jane Z., asks us to consider an alternative that doesn’t require us all to give up hamburgers – regenerative agriculture.
Jane Z. is the host of Farm to Future podcast. She’s taking her academic background in sustainability, and her absolute love of food to create conversations that deepen our understanding of the farm to table process.
Now, what is regenerative agriculture anyway? Regenerative agriculture and organic farming have distinct goals and practices. Organic farming primarily focuses on avoiding synthetic chemicals like pesticides and fertilizers. In contrast, regenerative agriculture aims to restore the entire ecosystem of the farm by enhancing soil health, promoting biodiversity, sequestering carbon, and producing nutrient-dense food.
In today’s episode, we’re hitting on some of the highlights and frequently asked questions that I get a lot about things like glyphosate and seed oils. I highly encourage you to tune in to this and then go check out Farm to Future for an even more comprehensive vision of the future of our food.
In this episode, we discuss:
-
The difference between organic farming and regenerative agriculture
-
How to find and buy from farms you can trust
-
The benefits of raw milk vs. pasteurized milk
-
Why you should stay away from seed oils
- What’s the deal with glyphosate and gluten?
Bio-Individuality in Food Consumption
Everyone’s bodies process foods differently. I tried a vegan diet because I thought that would be healthier for me, and it wasn’t. My blood sugar was through the roof and my Hashimoto’s was worse than ever. For other people, a vegan diet is ideal for them.
Jane just went got DNA testing done, which went through her nutrition and diet needs. She found that she has carb and salt sensitivities. Jane pointed out how popular carnivore diets are right now, but one of her DNA results was that she has a higher risk of toxin build up if she has red meat all the time. She never would have known about it unless she had these tests done.
Genetics play a huge role in the type of diet you should have. Don’t give these influencers as much say in the foods you do or don’t eat.
I don’t want to come down on anyone’s way of eating. I don’t like the extremes or people telling others that they have to eat a certain way to be healthy. What works for someone else might not work for you, and that’s okay!
Regenerative Foods
Find farms that actually call themselves regenerative! It shows they’re transparent about their farming practices.
The best thing you can do is actually go and visit the farms to see the conditions the animals and crops are grown in. You can start to build relationships with the farms you source food from. You’ll probably find some shocking conditions, but others that are truly regenerative agriculture farms will be noticeably different.
Here are some places to find regenerative foods:
- Find a farm on Farm Match
- Find raw milk near you
Start Eating More Regeneratively
I’m not here to tell you to not eat certain foods to be healthy. You can decide that on your own. I just want to make sure you’re eating the highest quality food that you can. Food without pesticides and unnecessary chemicals. That’s what we should focus on more.
