I put my Hashimoto’s into remission holistically. Dr. Hannah Lindsey, our guest today, healed her Crohn’s disease through her diet alone. I’m so excited about this episode because it hits close to home after the health struggles I, and so many in my audience, have been through. You can heal Hashimoto’s and other conditions naturally!
Dr. Lindsey knew she wanted to become a naturopathic physician after her own personal experience with Crohn’s disease and never looked back. If you’re somebody with thyroid issues, you’re not going to want to miss this.
On todays episode, we dig into why western medicine doctors won’t do full thyroid panels, the root causes of thyroid issues in Hashimoto’s, and more. Dr. Lindsay tells the story that led her to become a naturopathic physician and why she is so passionate about identifying and treating the underlying cause of disease instead of slapping a band-aid on our health issues.
We get a behind the scenes look at Hannah’s process with her patients and gain a better understanding of the comprehensive care that needs to go into treating thyroid issues.
If you’re sick and tired of scouring the internet for answers to your thyroid questions because your doctor won’t give you an answer that makes sense, this episode is for you.
In This Episode, I Cover:
- Hannah’s story in how she has handled her diagnosis of Crohn’s disease and Hashimoto’s
- There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to thyroid issues and what questions need to be asked to get to the root cause
- The work required in the pursuit of healing and why naturopathic solutions are a commitment beyond taking medication
- Hannah answers all of my questions around hormone testing; why allopathic doctors just won’t do it
- Hannah’s lifestyle suggestions for people facing thyroid issues and advice for healing Hashimoto’s
Root Causes of Hashimoto’s
It’s frustrating, but when we talk about Hashimoto’s, we always talk about a form of genetic predisposition. There is some level of genetic predisposition to some autoimmune conditions. However, people often just throw that to the wind and assume that’s the cause of Hashimoto’s. That can’t be further from the truth.
One of the triggers of Hashimoto’s is stress, and that’s what Dr. Hannah experienced in medical school. She started presenting symptoms, got tested, and started being treated.
There’s always a trigger that starts this autoimmune process. Our bodies don’t just decide one day to attack its own tissue out of no where.
Triggers could look like:
- Mold toxicity
- Environmental toxins
- Food sensitivity
- Diet
- Toxic metals
- Chronic infections
- Trauma
- Estrogen dominance
Everyone is so different when Dr. Hannah treats Hashimoto’s because the triggers can vary widely. She works to treat the trigger rather than the symptoms.
Full Thyroid Panel
I always recommend people get a full thyroid panel. So often, people will go to the doctor with classic signs of a thyroid issue and the doctor will only run a TSH test.
A full thyroid panel is actually six tests that gives you a super clear idea of what’s going on with your thyroid. THAT’S what you need if nothing shows up on the TSH test and you’re sure your symptoms have something to do with your thyroid.
Lifestyle Changes
Certain lifestyle or environmental factors impact our thyroid. While it might not lead to 100% healing, these small changes can definitely improve the condition of your thyroid.
- Avoid fluoride
- Filter drinking water
- Remove plastics
- Avoid pesticides
You are in charge of your health. It’s important to find professionals (doctors, dentists, pediatricians, etc.) who are aligned with your values.

FAQs About Healing Hashimoto’s
Yes. Certain foods can increase inflammation, trigger immune responses, or interfere with thyroid function in people with Hashimoto’s. Common culprits include gluten, highly processed foods, refined sugar, industrial seed oils, and excessive alcohol. While not everyone needs to eliminate the same foods, identifying personal triggers through elimination and reintroduction can significantly reduce symptoms.
A holistic approach focuses on supporting the body rather than masking symptoms. This often includes eating an anti-inflammatory diet, prioritizing gut health, managing stress and cortisol levels, improving sleep, and correcting nutrient deficiencies. Many people also benefit from gentle movement, nervous system regulation, and working with a practitioner who addresses root causes.
Avoid ignoring symptoms just because labs look “normal,” relying solely on medication without lifestyle support, or following extreme diets that stress the body. Over-exercising, chronic under-eating, and unmanaged stress can all worsen autoimmune flares. Most importantly, don’t assume your condition is unchangeable—Hashimoto’s is highly responsive to consistent, supportive care.
