Chiropractic care is surrounded by a world of misconceptions. Years ago, I truly thought the only reason for getting adjusted was if I had a major injury. So today, I’m chatting with my personal and longtime chiropractor, Dr. Rachel Richards.

For Dr. Rachel, being a chiropractor was not her original plan. Her first career in engineering ended when she realized how unhappy she was going to work everyday. Now, Dr. Rachel finds her work as a chiropractor to be fulfilling because she really believes in the power her work has to change her patients lives.

We’re digging in to all things chiropractic care and getting adjusted from the origin story of chiropractic’s to how you can go about finding an aligned chiropractor in your area. Personally, I take my whole family to the chiropractor for a whole host of reasons and some of them might surprise you. Dr. Rachel practices with an applied kinesiology background and specializes in Neural Emotional Techniques that help patients process stored trauma and emotions.

When I think of all of the healthcare providers in my life, getting adjusted is one thing I won’t go a long period of time without. Dr. Rachel shares generous information about what you can expect from a chiropractor, when to see a chiropractor as opposed to a regular doctor, and so many helpful tips.

Dr. Rachel explains that this is because chiropractic care focuses on balancing the nervous system, you will walk away feeling confident that you can go find a chiropractor and explore the benefits for yourself!

IN THIS EPISODE, WE COVER:

  • Dr. Rachels background as an engineer and what made her change course
  • The interesting story of how chiropractic care came to be
  • How symptoms can have different causes and solutions for each patient
  • My experience struggling with my first born’s reflux and how a chiropractor helped solve the problem – not pharmaceuticals
  • Chiropractic care as it relates to the nervous system
  • Addressing the misconceptions about chiropractors
  • What a typical visit to the chiropractor might look like
  • What neuroemotional technique is
  • How to find the right chiropractor for you

What is Chiropractic Care?

A lot of people think you only go to a chiropractor for neck or back pain, but chiropractic care doesn’t originate from pain at all. It can support overall wellness.

Chiropractic care is a healthcare approach that focuses on the relationship between the spine, nervous system, and overall body function. It’s all about balancing, regulating, and optimizing the nervous system. Chiropractors use hands-on techniques to help improve alignment, restore mobility, and reduce discomfort in the musculoskeletal system.

The root cause of pain or discomfort can be totally different between everyone. There is never one thing that can be used for treatment because we have to address the root cause first.

Because treatments are tailored to each individual, chiropractic care can be beneficial for people at many stages of life.

What It’s Like Getting Adjusted

First, finding someone you can connect with is important. Even if you’ve had a bad experience in the past, try finding someone new because there are so many benefits of regular chiropractic care.

In Rachel’s practice, they look at any problem or symptoms someone is having through the lens of potentially having one of four causes:

  • Structural stress
  • Emotional stress
  • Toxic stress
  • Nutritional stress

Part of the evaluation is to determine which ones of those are there so we can create a plan for that person. At an initial visit, we do a thorough physical evaluation, including a posture evaluation and orthopedic test.

The chiropractic adjustment is about balancing the nervous system. That can mean so many different things. Sometimes it does mean cracking, but if people don’t want that, there are other ways to address root causes.

Their goal is to restore function and balance to the nervous system.

Go See a Chiropractor

I love getting adjustments because I feel like my blood starts to flow better. I get an immediate reaction from being adjusted. I get better clarity and my body feels way better afterward.

If you’ve never seen a chiropractor, I highly recommend finding one and trying it out. You might not get an immediate reaction like I do, but over time, you’ll start to notice improvements in your posture, brain fog, and body aches.

And if you’re in San Diego, go see Dr. Rachel!
