If you have hard water, then you need to choose a laundry detergent that has ingredients that are able to work in that environment. If you have a house filter with a water softener, then you have soft water. If you aren't sure, you can get a $10 hard water at home test on Amazon. Regardless of your water, it's important to deep clean your washing machine monthly.

I really love my Thieves. Thieves laundry soap is highly concentrated and there is nothing in it but soap, plant derived surfactants and regenerative, organic essential oils. It is amazing for those with soft water.
If you have hard water (over 180ppm), this won't work well for you.
