Fluoride Myth
It’s always been a myth that fluoride being in the water prevents cavities. They cherry-pick studies and say fluoride is good for preventing cavities. That’s all related to the topical use of fluoride on your teeth can help reduce cavities. That is 100% true. BUT there has never been strong evidence that drinking fluoridated water has the same effect. Actually, there is a lot of evidence suggesting there are negative consequences when it is ingested.
How Are You Exposed to Fluoride?
There are two places where you’re getting exposed to it. One of them is in your toothpaste. It’s easy to swap your toothpaste for something that is not fluorinated. What you want to look for is hydroxyapatite. It has been proven in studies to work as well topically at reducing cavities as fluoride but without all of the neurotoxin side effects of fluoride. It is a simple swap.
RiseWell is the company that I love the most. It’s my number one toothpaste pick. Shop here and use the code WENDYKATHRYN10 for 10% off! I also had the founders of RiseWell on episode 80, and you can go listen to their story of why they created RiseWell and why I love their toothpaste so much.
The other place that you’re exposed to fluoride is in your drinking water. You’re drinking it every single day. 75% of Americans are drinking fluoridated water and for the other 25%, if you live in an area that doesn’t fluoridate your water, there is a chance that there is naturally occurring fluoride in your water, especially in well water. Some groundwater systems have naturally occurring fluoride and some have none, so you would have to test your water to find out if your well water has fluoride in it.
I always preach that we should be filtering our drinking water. Our tap water in America is full of toxins, pharmaceuticals, and other chemicals, and fluoride is one of them. And those very cheap, very typical filtration systems that you get, like Brita filters, will not filter out fluoride. It takes special filters to get rid of fluoride.
Having a good quality drinking water filter is the best thing you can do for your health. It’s the number one thing that I think most people could do. You should not be exposed to fluoride. We’re going to have to wait and see what happens next with the EPA, but in the meantime, it is good to know you can take control of your health and you can manage your fluoride exposure.
So is fluoride toxic? It’s certainly not something you want to be ingesting and you want to control your intake as much as possible.
